375 H&H - Magnum or large rifle primer?
      #149754 - 07/01/10 04:51 PM

Hello all,

What primer would you use in a 375 H&H?

A lot of, if not most information recommends magnum primers but then some say large rifle primers are OK.

I have done some preliminary loads and just used CCI large rifle primers as that is what I had on hand and they seemed to work just fine.

The powder I used (ADI 2209) almost fills the case but is not a compression load, I have heard that using faster powders that do not fill the case so much are the ones that benefit more from magnum primers, but I’m not sure if this is in fact true.

Anyway just wanted to know if I am possibly taking any risks or posing any danger to be using large rifle primers.

Cheers.

More than one "big name" reloading manual use Remington 9 1\2 magnum caps. I use them with both of mine with stellar results.

I run magnum primers in all of my rifles including my 6-223 . They seem to be harder in the cup & in some testing I've done they give 30 -50 fps more velosity over a standard primer with the same amount of powder.

I use CCI200 (standard) without problems. AR2209 is a bit slow for the 375 and you may want to try AR2208. Most of the 2208 loads will be slightly compressed - I'm suprised that none of the 2209 loads are compressed since it is a slower powder and you use more of it.

I've only used magnum primers (CCI) for cast lead projectile loads (270gn gas check and 30gn AR2205) since there was a lot of free space inside the loaded case and it resulted in hang-fires. A filler can be used to the same effect instead of the magnum primer for the cast loads.

It depends on what powder you're using, and to some degree where you are. My choice is 4350, which is not an extremely slow powder. The 375 H&H looks big, but isn't as big as one might think. Standard Winchester WLR primers work fine for me.

If you are using one of the very slow powders, or are in a very cold climate, or both, then magnum primers may be in order.

In the larger cases from 9.3x57 on up to the .45's, I usually use CCI250 primers for all powders, ball or stick from BLC2 to H4895.

Note that you should start your load development with the same primer - not switch part way through.

I'm saving my Fed 215's for my BP ctg. guns.

G'Day Fella's,

Brewman, I recently mentioned elsewhere on this forum that my .375 H&H load is;

Remington .375 H&H Case
Remington 9 1/2 Magnum Primer
80grains of ADI AR 2209 (2600fps)
and
300 grain Jacketed Lead Bullets, Not Crimped in place!

Brewman, this is what I consider to be a "Maximum Safe Working Load" but This is Only in My Ruger Magnum B/A rifle!
You should reduce this powder charge by 5% (4 to 5 Grains of powder) and then progressively increase the powder charge in one grain increments in your rifle and component combination, all the time keeping an eye out for signs of excessive pressure!!!

I use Rem 9 1/2Magnum and CCI 250 Magnum primers in all my 08, -06 and Magnum size cases apart from my .22-250 AI and I use CCI BR2 primers in that.

Hope this helps.

The 375 H&H is a magnum size case holding a magnum weight powder charge, so IMO a magnum primer is a better choice for this cartridge.
Have a look through all the reloading manuals and see what primers they use for the 375 H&H.
Most loads will use a magnum primer.
Regarding risks, I feel there is a higher degree of risk using a standard primer in that size case than using a magnum primer.

Magnum primers make lots of sense in the 375H&H. Some of the posters mention that it is a large case but not overbore by any means. Whilst this might be true, standard H&H loads vary between 75 - 80 grains of powder. I think thats a lot of powder, especially in a long column. Magnum will guarantee you a result, whilst standard primers may hangfire under less than ideal conditions. Not great for what is essentially a hunting cartridge, often used on dangerous game. Just my 2c worth guys.

I've never used a magnum primer. CCI 200 large rifle primers have worked just fine with every shot I've ever fired in my 375s. My powder of choice is Alliant's Reloader 15.
