416 Rigby, having trouble finding primers
      #122489 - 28/12/08 01:37 PM

I obtained a new (to me) 416 Rigby built on a Brno ZKK 602, I would like to take it out and give it a run, but I can't find primers anywhere. All 4 of my reloading manuals (Asquare, Hornady, Nosler, Barnes) List the primer to use as a Federal 215 (Or 215M, depending on source)

Trouble is, all the gunshops I went into say they haven't seen Federal primers for over a year, shortage or some stuff like that.

So My question is, what Could I use in substitute for the Federal 215?

I'm using a Remington 9 1/2M in my 375 H&H, Could that be used?

Current components are:

Hornady Brass
Hornady 400 GR RN Interlock projectiles
IMR 4350 Powder

Thanks.

Trev

I have good experience with CCI 250 or RWS 5333.

Beside Federal 215 Winchester magnum is known to be the hotest

If you wish, and it is legal, I would be willng to send you a pack of 100 to try of Fed 215--I probably have around 4000 in my inventory.I have been able to get some every couple of months or so, and as they are in short supply, I buy them..

also there are several websites you should be able to get on to check out what is very similar in performance..

One item, I just read an article in Rifleshooter where a test was done on accuracy and it was amazing as to how the groups changed using the same load and only changing the primer...

Thanks, but I think customs would have issue

I'll keep looking, there in SUPER short supply apparently.

Try Lawry shooting sports in Caledonia, I believe they are the Distributers for Federal.

Trev, I can't help but feel that using IMR4350 & I would expect about 90-95 grains of such, that you will be fine with CCI250s or 9 1/2M primers. IMR4350 is not a particularly hard to ignite powder in my experience. Certainly less so than any of the slower ball powders.

Was in a local shop here in Montana this weekend--one shop alone had 6 cases of 215 primers..that's 6000 primers...

Not sure why it should be so difficult for you to get them up there?? What reason are you given??

In Canada we don't need to be given a good reason if it is related to gun stuff - but generally the US State Deaprtment has many, many controls - some quite new, dealing with "End User" certificates prior to any components leaving the country. Some material such as anything that was EVER military is barred from leaving the United States - scopes , stocks etc are all part of this control. I am not saying in any way that it is wrong to do this -- there is a war being fought and I understand it - it just nmake sit hardfor law abiding guys that like guns. I for one dream of being able to phone Huntingtons and order some NE brass or bullets! Boy it would be easy!

Manufacturers in your country must apply for these Certs to the State Dept and many either havent got around to it or will not do it. Primers are just another item that can get choked off quickly here. I am not saying that this is the reason - but it is one of the reasons that we Canadians find it very hard to secure American made gun related supplies.

Powder and primers have their own "explosive" regs to contend with along with shipping hassles.

I for one am now looking to Europe for many of my items such as scopes or rings and bases (even US made items there are easier to get then directly from the USA).

Anyway TKV - try Alberta Tactical Supply in Calgary as Rick usually has some supply and may be able to spare some.

Thanks to all for the advice, I was at a local gun show today, and spotted someone selling reloading supplies. Sure enough there were a few box's of Federal 215, I snagged 3 box's of 1000. I should be good for a while

Took a few months, but persistence paid off.
