I know very little about it , what little I have heard is that it originated in SA , and is very popular there , it is a 3" case , and is rimmed , matches the Ackley in performance .. i.e. 2400~ with a 500 grain bullet ..
I know someone who has a reamer for the 458 No2 ( an improved version ?? ) , that I'm trying to con them out of ..They state the head is approximately .533" ..

What I'd like to know is who the parent case is ??

And only being slighty longer than the Lott , I am thinking , cleaning up the Lott chamber with this reamer shud be pretty strait forward job , and wud think that it shudnt be a problem using that action ..

Am I right or wrong ??

OK I got some "facts" given me by others crossed up ..

I have since seen for myself two things

One is there is a 458 belted 3" ..

The other is there is a 458 Express based on the 404 Jeff case ..

I have a chance at the 458 Express No.2 reamers , is their a major difference between these two that anyone knows of ..

I think the 458 3" was made in Africa because powder availability prevented getting 2300 f/s from the 458 Lott with 500 grainers.

There are three 45s based on the 404 that I am aware of. The 450 Guns and Ammo (G&A) and the 460 G&A. Both are blown out 404 cases and the 450 G&A case is shortened to 2.5"

Then the African PH Roy Vincent has the 450 Vincent and 460 Vincent which again are a shortened and full length blown out 404 case.

There is the 450 Howell. This is blown out 404 shortened back to work in standard length actions.

There is also a line of wildcats which I think have a name like Ultra Cats and are all based on the Remington Ultra case.

There is a poster there called Boom Stick and he seems to have something on about every big bore cartridge ever thought of.

This is my understanding also - for reference, it is mentioned in Kevin Robertson's book "Africa's most dangerous".

What advantage it really offers over the 458 Lott is dubious though, unless you really need 2300fps

. The whole point of the Lott was to get a reliable 2150fps without compression and pressure problems associated with the 458 Winchester at the time (which are arguably no longer valid anyway with modern powders).

: Good point. My .458 Alaskan has no trouble making 2,200fps with 500gr. jacketed bullets without compressing the powder charge, only meeting it. The capacity is identical to the .458 WM.

I can get an honest 2250 with 500's in my CZ Lott ..

The 3" will do 2400 IIRC

The expess isnt far from it ..

Have been in touch with Pierre van der Walt .. He came up with the Express round ..

The reamer will be here soon ..
