Check out this link to an environmental communities forum for the real reasons behind the hunting bans in Botswana:

Yeah...I am sure elephant poaching will stop simply by banning hunting.

Interesting to read through all the comments posted. Some seemed to have a slightly open mind, others more unhinged.

Claydog is right, some of the member posts actually do seem a bit openminded, but not all of them.

Ever notice how you never hear from hunters advocating for the closing of game parks?

I've been to Chobe, Kruger and a private place called Maholoholo, and we had a great time at all of them, but to me it's not the same when the animals just stare at you indifferently, and the throngs of vehicles jockeying for position when something significant is spotted really kind of spoils it.

It's nice to see the animals and you get great photo ops, but is it real? This is in reference to the poster that talks about how nice and calm the elephants are. Who the hell wants nice calm elephants? Is that how nature is supposed to be? While I'm sure his intentions are good, the poor fool apparently doesn't understand his lack of perspective, nor does he contemplate the possibility that hunters love the animals too.

I'm sorry that I never got the chance to hunt Botswana. Let's hope they don't follow the Kenya model of success.

"and the throngs of vehicles jockeying for position when something significant is spotted really kind of spoils it."

I once read a great article about one of these game parks.

The people in one vehicle had spotted some Lions
and driven up to see them. They were the only vehicle.
Everyone else were in other locations.

His comment was, when one vehicle stops, every other vehicle
moves to that location so you end up with a circle of cars
around what you are looking at, the end result being the animals piss off !
