I have a question , I am going to hunt Africa in 05 and have not bought a rifle yet.Do you have any opinion on renting rifles there. I would like to buy my own but it might take another year before I can get one.The cost is unreal to me. " Double rifle"

If you can't affford a $600 rifle how can you afford the trip? No offense but it is intriguing.

Rental Rifles are usually the ones the PH dosen't want to use. It can be good or bad, pot luck.

...i have a colleague who used his ph's 505 gibbs on an rsa lion hunt...the 505 netted what my colleague claims is the 4th highest sci scored lion (02-03 year)...i believe that the use of the turnbolt was included as part of the package...

...perhaps you can inquire about this at such time as you actually book the hunt...

most outfitters will be prepared to rent you s rifle, but don't expect anything of particularly good quality. We use a Blaser R93 & Swarovski scope for this, but most companies won't have a loaner rifle of such good quality.

You also have to consider what you're going to hunt in your trip. If it's plains game then the fact that you're unfamiliar with the rifle won't matter too much, but if you're planning to hunt Dangerous Game then it might not be such a good idea......another factor in your decision should be the quality of the PH. If he's good at what he does then you can place a great deal more reliance on him than if he's a young kid straight out of training.

SCI stopped accepting RSA Lions 3-4 years ago because of the 'Canned' nature of the vast majority of them. How would your friend have any idea of comparison to other Lions? I think someones is having their leg pulled a bit.

...just shows how easy it is to fool a 'casual' hunter such as myself...tho, i need to check whether the lion was in fact harvested in rsa or elsewhere...

If you're going to hunt any D.G. use your own gun. If you're plannig toi hunt plains game you can rent one but you can pay for a wounded animal.

600$ for a .416 isn't too much money and you'll be safe.

If you are after Dangerous Game get your own rifle and get to know it in the field or the range and get a quality gunsmith to go over it as you do not want it to fail in a dangerous situation . If price is a problem the best value for money I would get is a original Winchester, 70, Pre 64, in .375H&H and get a 'smith to go over it or a new Winchester 70 "Classic Safari Express" in .375H&H or a BRNO in .375H&H or .416 Rigby , if you are after a double a Merkel in .470NE is value for money or a William Douglass if you can find one. Your friend was probably telling you the truth.SCI had briefly stopped accepting lions from R.S.A. and Namibia but the record book now has a section strictly devoted for lions from these two countries. S.C.I. began separating the lions in Edition X.
