Just received and watched the video 'Mauled', which shows pretty good footage of a mortally wounded Tom taking the PH out. I think start to finish , ie about 20 yards and three loads of buckshot , the Tom gets to the PH in 0.7 secs !
An eye opener for those wishing to track/spoor/hunt leopard with hounds. Excellent observations by three of Zim's top PH's.

I think I've seen two or three videos as well can't recall their names at the PH school wher they also showed leopards attacking two was for one of the tracker and the last one was the camera man that got hit by the cat.

Very nasty and very quick almost too quick. Incidently all of them occured on rocky outcrops in Zimbabwe.

This one was in Botswana. Excellent stuff.
The Zim PH's then had a long discussion (Lou Hallamore, Rusty Luverskuknie (sp?) and another) about leopard charges, and went through some testing of suitable shotgun loads. Some of the results were frightening to say the least.

I heard somewhere that tracking a Tom with dogs especially in Namibia where ther are not so many hides almost always ends with that the Tom backs up in a bush and wait for you to come and be attacked.

you can order on line, they also have one called 'The jaws of Simba' where a wounded Lion takes out the PH.
All good stuff.
CCHunter, try and get hold of 'Hostile ground' which has some very good footage of hunting leopard with dogs in the Kalahari. In particular, they have a good Tom charge, and put down at about 5 or 6 paces with shotguns,apart from the usual Lion, Buff and Ele hunts.

Mpofu in your first post you mention 3 loads of b-shot,is the ph using an auto or is their more than one shotgun on the video?

Gryphon,
Basically, the hunter has a shot at the Tom over an impala bait, wounds it in the side, and they then track it for a couple of days in the Kalahari sand.
The PH then uses a Ridgeback , and they track the Tom into young mopane woodland and brush. The dog gets really jittery, and the PH then sees it about 20 yards out. He puts both barrels of his O/U into the charging animal, and his asst. gets a shot off too. The leopard takes the PH in the face/upper body, and pulls him to the ground. It has his left arm in it's mouth and gives it a bit of a chew. The Asst runs up and puts the final shot into it whilst the PH , on his stomach holds it out at arms length.
The PH was clearly saved from a real scratch up, by his leather jacket.
If you get into www.outdoorvisions.com , and go into the preview section, you can download footage of a leopard coming out of a cave and taking the PH out. It's from a video called 'leopard charge'.
