observer day rates
      #52552 - 16/03/06 10:52 AM

My wife has decided to accompany me on my plains game hunt in Namibia. The safari operators have told me she is welcome but the daily fee for her is $150/day USD. This seems fair to us but when I asked if she could harvest one of my warthogs or springbuck their reply was," I would need to pay a 2X1 daily fee for this". Does that sound normal?

An observer can often take anywhere from a couple of the lesser animals on offer for a 1x1 safari all the way to all the plains game offered on a leopard hunt. If the observer wants to shoot additional animals that are not offered on the shooter's 1x1 safari I can see the rate going to 2x1. When the observer only wants to share a small piece of the 1x1 bag there is no reason to bump the safari to 2x1. Recently I was able in Namibia to offer a 14 day 1x1 safari with 2 observer. The observers both were allowed a kudu and 2 other animals without increasing the rate.

Contact me if you'd like details.

Mark thank you for your reply. Please allow me to rephrase my comment about safari operators. It was not operators but operator, the one we chose whom made that comment.
It sounded odd that her rate should jump from $150 to $250 which is the rate for 2x1 at this lodge.
I'm not prone to quibble about $100 on a trip that will cost us $8000 or so door to door. Though I want to be treated fairly.

Depends on the outfitter and also their legal setup.

Some outfitters are just a bit greedy and want it all. Others see it as positive PR and goodwill. Keeping the wifey or companion happy with an impala and/or warthog keeps the whole camp happier . Also if wifey really likes it, see may want her own safari hunt next time.

Some outfitters may also have certain conditions put on them by the owner of the concession which might be a limiting factor.

We wouldn't have charged the 2x1 price either. If it were just the odd animal or two we would have kept to the observer rate.... but not every safari company works to the same rules.

Canguk,

That doesn't sound reasonable to me. I don't recall having met a PH that wouldn't let a wife/child shoot a few "lesser" animals like a warthog, impala etc without increasing the daily rates.

I would also like to add, that although it is not uncommen for an observer fee to be US$150, I personally think it would be more reasonable to be priced around US$100, especially in Namibia where logistics are quite easy.

I understood you were speaking only of the company you are dealing with in Namibia. I also thinnk the situation you described is the exception rather than the rule.
