I'll vote for the 308, just because I can get ammo most anywhere, & it's versitile bullet selection. (but don't forget the 3006 which would my #1 vote)

How about something a little different, like the 7x61 Sharpe & Hart or the 6.5-284?

I'd go for either the 280 or 308, most likely the 308 (due to ammo availability). I believe the 280 has a little more "whack" built into it though.

Just out of curiosity, why do you hate the .270?

Good luck.

The 270 is just one ot those cartridges that I have never reall liked. One of the reasons I guess is because I have helped track to many deer that run off that were shot with a 270. But when it comes down to it, it was probably just piss poor shooting on the shooters. I like the 270wby. Never had any dealings with the 270WSM do you know anything about it?

that sounds interesting. How much trouble is it to get a rifle chambered in 6.5-284. Can you get them in a factory rifle or are they a custom job only??

I believe Norma added it to their line in 1999 so it is fairly "new" (no longer a wildcat). As far as factory rifles, I do not know of any here in North America but maybe there is a European manufacturer that chambers it. You can look for a 284 and rebarrel it or find a short action with a .473 bolt face and do the same. Since it has a rebated rim and the case is "fatter", maybe there has to be a little tweeking if converting a 7mm mauser etc. I'm sure someone here will have the answer.

Personally I'd far rather have a 6.5-06...it's far easier to build, dies are standard (as are the 6.5-284) and brass is easy to find.....any .25-06 brass or even .270 brass will work...

Performance is similar and cases so stamped are available if you wish. All you need is a mauser '98, a springfield 03-A3, an Enfield P-17 or any .25-06,.270,.280,.30-06 action ever made.

Gotta go with a .308 given your choices. It'll do anything you should want and the choice of amoo is astounding. With the Hornady light magnum ammo it's better than most .30-06 loads.

Having said all that maybe I need to get a .308 next year...

I guess if I had seen a bunch of game lost to a .270, I wouldn't like it either. However, my Tikka .270 is a tack driver and has accounted for a few pigs now. My opinion: if one can't shoot a .270 accurately, then one won't be able to shoot a 308 or 280 either. It (the 270) packs a respectable wallop if driven to the correct target area. Regarding a .270 WSM, A buddy of mine has one, and he reports the following:

1) It is very accurate and flat shooting.

2) Ammo selection & availability leaves something to be desired

3) He has controlled round feeding (CRF) for his rifle, and has not had any problems (with the fat WSM cases). I've personally heard of some feeding issues with them, but not seen one yet. You might consider CRF if you were to choose such a caliber.

I've been pondering a .300 WSM or maybe even a 325 WSM (which just came out). It would be a good step up for me.

You could always get one of each? Wouldn't that be nice? I think if I were in your shoes, I'd go for the .308. It’s a great round, indeed.

Good luck, and let us know what you decide.

I would consider any caliber, not just the ones that I had listed. Those were just ideas. After talking to a few people I have changed my mind and I am leaning heavily toward the Cz mdl 3 in 270 WSM with wood stock and stainless and maybe 60 to 100 dollars at my gunsmith.I think it is a good looking rifle for the money and will do anything a 270 will do and all on a short action.

For the record it wasn't me who was shooting the 270. I was just helping them track their deer. But it was the shooters fault and not the cartridge.

I thought about it a lot. Talked to a couple of good friends of mine. I ended up ordering the a model 70 in 270 WSM. Should be here by the end of the week. They had coyote's in other calibers and I really liked the feel of them So I guess I will let you know more after I get it.]
