.400/350, any information.

Hello all.

I am looking at a double rife from Chas. Lancaster, Sidelock.
Caliber is the 400/350 regulated for the 310 gr. bullet.

How is these caliber?
Is it close to the more known 400/360?

Any hunting information will be good. Someone who use it today?

In fact, the .400/350 Rigby is better known than both 400/360s, the Purdey or the Westley-Richards versions. Kynoch advertized the 310gr bullet at 2000 fps mv. Cases may be formed from 9.3x74R brass and loaded with .358" bullets.

Thanks for the information.
Sounds like an interesting caliber. A good deer, hog caliber.
What did Rigby have in mind when they did make it? Short range deer, hog and so in Africa and India I guess. Not a large game caliber.

Gentlemen,

I have an old Rigby rifle in the caliber 400/350 Rigby Nitro Express.

The rifle is equipped with an ancient scope which does not fit my needs, so I plan to mount an additional modern scope in the old rifle bases for switching from "modern" to "original" condition.

Brass can be obtained from Bell end maybe Horneber.
I used to reform new RWS cases in 9,3x74R.

After forming and thinning of the rim, the cases were fireformed with a medium load of a) Kemira N140 and b) Rottweil R 904 (approx. Reloader 19) with a 250grs Hornady SPRN bullet.

If you are interested, I can provide more data.
Up to now I did shoot the rifle only on the range, for hunting I would stay with the Hornady 250grs SPRN or the Woodleigh 250grs SPRN.
Feeding of the 250grs Partition was not successful, the lead points tend to be deformed.
The system is a Mauser 98 Magnum system, which has a more shallow angle of cartridge to chamber axis, but the rifle dislikes feeding Partitions.

With round nose bullets the rifle feeds flawlessly, even with the Woodleigh 310grs SPRN.

Great cartridge! I've been shooting a double 400-350 NE for many years and am very confident using it on any Aus game including bulls. I use 250 grain Hornady or Woodleigh bullets on medium game like wild boar, and 310 grain Woodleigh softs and solids on the big stuff.
The cartridge gives very low recoil but kills extremely well.
It's also easy to reload using re-formed 9.3 x 74R cases.

Forecast:
Today in the evening I will shoot the rifle on the range (only 50 meters).

Photos of targets and rifle will be taken this week and sent to Mehul.

I found also a 1937 Mauser standard system in my recycling bin, I will also make some photos for comparing the Magnum to the standard 98 system.
And please, do not expect gold inlays or engraving on the Rigby, that is a pure working gun without any fancy nonsense!

What kind of gun you use?
So, from what I have learned, the caliber/gun combination will be good for Moose, deer, wild boar here in Europe and US/Canada and also not that bad for a trip to Australia or Africa.

My 400-350 NE is an O/U which was custom built by an Aussie gunsmith.
Yes, the cartridge is ideal for boar, moose, and deer.
It would usually be considered too light for African Dangerous Game though. It could handle them ok with backup, but a larger cal would be a better choice for the big nasty stuff.
