What is the best factory sporting bolt action rimfire ?
      #265534 - 26/05/15 05:51 AM

Of the one's I own my favorites are the Kimber Mod 82 Super America, The Anschutz 1422D, the Winchester 52B Sporter and BRNO Mod 1. I would love to find a clean Mauser 350.
The one I use the most is a 1947 BRNO Mod 1. I filed the recoil lug off the rear Burris ring that is made for the CZ 527 so that it would fit the 16mm dovetail and installed a Leupold VX-1 3-7 Rimfire scope. The Anschutz has a VX-I 3-7. I was lucky to find Redfield bases for it.The 52B sports a Vari- X II 3-9.The Kimber and Anschutz are very accurate, the Winchester comes close. The BRNO would benefit from a better trigger.

G'Day Fella's,

Wanabebwana, I'm biased, Brno Model 1, 2 etc and CZ 452 Rimfires are the best!
They (and variations/copies of), are the only Rimfire designed and made like a Centrefire rifle!!!
Because of this, they are exceedingly robust and reliable and generally very accurate. The only thing I've seen go wrong with them, is the standing ejector wears down, after 10,000's of rounds fired.

Whilst there are no shortage of other quality and accurate Rimfires about (Anschutz, etc), I prefer the reliability of the Brno/CZ design!
FYI, I own a Brno Model 1 (1951) and a CZ 452 (2003), both in .22LR.

BTW, nice lookin Model 1 you have there but it looks to have been refinished?

Doh!

I have to agree with Homer on the CZ452. Very robust design, hammer forged barrels that give superb accuracy and if you are lucky some have nicely figured walnut.
My CZ452fs is my favorite .22 LR sporting rifle by far.

I also agree with Homer. The BRNO is very well built with a screwed in barrel and a beautifully machined receiver and bolt. I have had it for over 30 yrs and have fired thousands of rounds with no extraction issues. I have had to disassemble the bolt only once to clean the firing pin. The mags are heavier gauge and will feed CB longs. I also have a 2012 452 Lux in .22WMR which has a very good trigger and a European look.

You shouldn't forget SAKO P94S. It's very good quality .22 LR made for adult person measurements.

Yes, IMO there is two different categories; factory-made and custom-ones.

The M7722's are also exceptional rifles right out of the box. I cannot, however, afford the $800.00 price tag. Seemed excessive to me.

My late buddy Brad had one and it was exceptionally smooth to work, with never a bobble from a magazine.

I like the BRNO M1, Walther KKJ and Steyr Zephyr in no particular order.
I do not mind the very peasantry Ruger 10/22 either

Gentlemen,

although I shoot Walther KKJ and Ruger 10/22 for training
I was fortunate enough to collect some rimfire bolt action Mausers like the Model 34 "Sportmodell", the Mm410 and also some Mauser M45, also some single shot rifles of Mauser.

Out of curiosity I tested the Mm410 for precision, attached a 12power scope and got some groups well below 19mm (size of a target patch) and one group below 13mm for 5 shots at 50 meters.
And that from a rifle ca. 80 years old!

Maybe these Mausers are not "best", but if Mr. Dorleac spends some of his free time to work with them, they could be!

best regards
Rolf

Hard one to answer. By best do you mean in looks, function, reliability, all of the previous.

The most accurate 22 I have shot was a cheap arse Sterling from the Phillipines. Shot most brands very well. Most would be put into a thumb nail at 50mts. Also proved to be very reliable. I suspect it was a freak. Looks, well that is in the eye of the beholder and in my eye it was plain ugly.

I like the Annies Browning T-Bolt or the old Browning take-down semi auto.

Well, Mike Bailey you make a good case, I would like to own that one and this one.
As an interesting side note, the Anschutz 54 (according to Speed's book) was a Mauser design also.

Back in '86 or '87, I picked up one of those Chinese-made "Clayco" bolt action 22s. Nothing special: iron sights, 5-shot detachable box magazine, plain-as-can-be wood covered with a colored lacquer. The wood got stripped and refinished, the action and mag de-burred, and then it got shot. A lot. This was my designated "teaching" rifle, used to introduce kids to shooting iron sights on a rifle. In addition to my own shooting, more than 120 kids (and more than a few adults) put at least 1,000 rounds apiece through it.

Given the original low-cost, and the working nature of the rifle, I took care of it "farmer-style". At the end of the day, I'd remove the stock and soak the metal overnight in the parts-washer. Come morning, I'd wipe it down and run a dry patch through the bore, then re-assemble and lube.

It was a good rifle, and one of my favorites of all the rimfires I've owned.

I have always liked the early Brnos and finally picked up one a few years ago. It is a TRG and is great for bowling over bunnies.

I do have to put a better scope on it one day.

Tom Burgess style rings. Whom make them these days?

I just gave a Mauser 420 B to a friend as his children are old enough to start shooting now. As substitute I bought a Mauser 410b with 10 and 5 shot magazines stamped by Mauser Oberndorf...Brno model 1 is great. The 54 action is also very sweet. Dakota 22 got a hinged floorplate to remove the little magazine - very cute.

I had a BRNO #1, and was intentidng to make into a custom ala Dorleac above, which I sadly sold in a weak moment..

I later found out the buyer had chopped the barrel and stock and painted it in cammo colours.

I felt sick for a few days afterwards!
