Leopard and Bear in India

I picked up "Man Eaters of India" by Jim Corbett and in it he mentions taking leopards and bears. With the tiger being in the limelight all the time, how are these other two animals doing?

I believe that there are plenty of them both...still many people killed and eaten by leopards.

Adam,

In some parts of India leopard populations are on the increase to an extent where the government has severe problems with them. The northern state of Himachal Pradesh mooted hunting them some years ago but India is a country where PETA has a former Cabinet Minister as it's patron. Naturally, nothing happened...

The sloth bear is a formidable beast and one that has been recorded giving tigers sound thrashing when they have clashed. It is funny, because many Indians' only experience of the bear is as a performing animal in the cities.

As far as the tiger is concerned, it will soon be extinct in the wild in India. The incompetence of the Indian government and the miserable state of affairs is certain to see that happen. I would love to be proven worng in this assumption, but I am certain that I will not be - I know India and Indian incompetence too well to believe differently than I do at the moment.

Bear killed in Tripura after wounding five

GUWAHATI: Tripura Police on Monday killed a bear after it had seriously wounded five people, officials said.

A police spokesman said a fully-grown bear entered village Pohormara, about 85 km northeast of Tripura's state capital Agartala, and went on a rampage.

"The bear went berserk attacking people and by the time a police team arrived the spot, the animal had already injured four people, including a woman," a senior police official said on telephone from Agartala.

The bear also attacked a policeman wounding him seriously.

"The police official who was grappling with the bear to free himself was hit by a bullet fired by the police team aimed at the animal," the official said.

The beast was later shot dead by the police.

It is true that many people are wounded by leopards but they
are not eaten ( not man eaters). The leopard has survived because ( quoting Corbett) ' it never loses its fear of humans'
Also, the leopard is adapt to any terrain and an expert in improvising any shelter as its home.

Even In the city of Bombay ( now Mumbai) there have been quite a few instances leopards surfacing on the outskirts of Powai and attacking residents of apartment complexes.

About a week back, a bear killed a villager in AP. The DFO rushed with two assistants and was promptly killed. Subsequently it was shot by Police.

In my state, it is quite common to read of leopard attacks in the
cities or nearby.
