Groups push for duck shooting backdown

Anti-duck shooters say they will take full advantage of the international media's presence in Melbourne during the Commonwealth Games.

ALP Members Against Duck Shooting and 40 other environmental and political groups have presented a joint document to the State Government, urging it to ban the sport.

Spokesman Trevor Poulten says the world's media will be transported to the wetlands to embarrass the Victorian Government.

"If the Government proceeds with a season and doesn't have a moratorium, or doesn't announce a ban on duck shooting, then we'll be heading off to the wetlands come early March, which is the same time as the Commonwealth Games commence and we'll be drawing attention during an election year that the Government must make an ethical decision," he said.

But the leader of the Victorian National party, Peter Ryan, has called on the Victorian Premier to stand firm on the issue, despite opposition from within the Labor Party.
