Saltwater Crocodile hunting in Australia
      #19695 - 11/10/04 11:43 AM

Would you trophy hunt an Australian Saltwater Crocodile for $10,000 ?

A poll. Would you if given a legal chance hunt a trophy saltwater crocodile in the Top End of Australia for $10,000?

Currently there is a plan put forward by the Northern Territory government for approval by the Commonwealth of Australia government to allow 25 safari hunts with CITES permits per year.

Numbers very much well in excess of 25 saltwater crocodiles are already taken out of the wild by trapping or shooting for so-called "problem" crocodiles. These permits already have CITES permits allowing the crocodile products to be exported. The difference in this proposal is allowing safari hunting.

Saltwater crocodiles are not endangered in Australia and were harvested before a ban on shooting was enacted due to severe decrease in numbers in the 1970's. Since then the numbers have re-bounded. I do not believe saltwater crocodiles can be legally hunted anywhere else in their range which extends from India to the Phillipines to New Guinea to Northern Australia.

The proceeds from safari hunting would benefit tourism, land owners including indiginous populations.

Comments welcomed.

That could be a neat hunt, but the price is too salty for me. Perhaps something in the 1 - 2 thousand dollar range would be better.

Remember Bakes and Mike, the hunt price would cover both trophy fees AND daly fees.

What is the usual daily rate and trophy fee to hunt Nile crocodile in say Zimbabwe or Tanzania? Anyone who is up to date, thanks.

This would just give us another cost prohibitive croc hunt. I can't see the value in a $10,000.00 hunt. I'd opt for an African buffalo hunt for only a bit more money.

The price makes this just another opportunity for the wealthy hunter to take something different, but precludes most others. Maybe somewhere between $3,500.00 and $5,000.00 would be more realistic, and have the permits by lottery.
