Nice clean antlers. Maybe a 'bit' of hormone feeding. Behind wire.

What was that discussion recently about Alberta breeding pens ....

What a "challenging" hunt that stag would make for the intrepid Nimrod ......

Starting bid is cheap too.

Is it a joke btw? ie rifle and stag deal?

Most likely not a joke , but it should be !

Having said that far more animals are shot in fenced hunting areas & pens in Australia than in New Zealand & far more Australians shoot in these areas & think it just the thing to do , more so in the younger generation

One huge area in SA was fenced & stock mainly to cater for the local hunter , but is used a lot now days by overseas hunters also !

The owner of the property next door to my mate in NZ often has large stags fenced in a small area or kept in an area by other means for OS hunters.

Only does about 6 - 8 hunts a year at $10k a pop.

Where I went the owner was selling Wapiti (Elk) hunts in a fenced area of 3,500 acres. It contained a lot of bush and prices were the same as a Plains Game hunt in Africa. He wasn't letting any clients in there this year as a drought had reduced the trophy potential. Demand is fairly constant though. Mainly from USA clients. It is cheaper to come to NZ for five days and chase them inside 3,500 acres of bush than pay for a guided Elk hunt in the USA.

He bred them for meat and the better genetics went into the 3,500 acres. Like the neighbour of 500Nitro's mate, hunts were limited to less than 6 per year.

I would suggest many, many more Aussies go there than O/S hunters these days mate!

Lots of Aussies hunting high-fence stuff these days...

Matt

Do people really care now ?

The deer I have seen on my mates place stayed their anyway
and his wasn't high fenced all around.
Still had to hunt hard in the hills.

I only object when the paddock is so small it's not funny
as my mates neighbour did with one stag, the thing was virtually tied down to the paddock, the US hunter flew in, was taken to the area, he walked a short distance and shot it. Flew out the next day.

Now whether he knew how tethered it was, who knows ?

Re Watervalley, some of the deer there are no different to hunt than in the wild eg the fallow and chital. Some appeared to have been recently released eg the rusa I photographed.

If one hunts a series of pastoral properties, probably only access to one, unless one is a poacher, but lets say in total the hunting area is 25,000 acres. How is hunting that, different to hunting a fenced area of 50,000 acres? And the fences do not keep the deer in.

Hunting say a 1000 acre fenced block is very different to 50,000. Also hunting an animal bred in a deer farm and then "released" is also like shooting a tame cow. Almost anyway.

Sarg is right. Lots of Aussies hunt these places in NZ. Not just the "young" generation as he says, club execs too.

But I think intensive breeding of animals for release for hunting is not ethical one bit, as the animals can take years to wild up.

Yeah people care. I personally dont hunt in any kind of high-fence but that is my own personal decision BUT I also run some high-fence hunts for various reason.

Some people really care what OTHER people do however and despise anyone who hunts inside high fence, even places like Watervalley (that are very large). I dont hunt like that myself but I sure dont despise people who do!!

That was my whole point about that Alberta thing - I cant understand why hunters would want to see the concept BANNED, when they accept that large, well run game ranches are ethical and can work very well if they are made to comply with certain regulations and standards.

Yeah the guy that shoots a canned hunt farm bred put and take stag REALLY CARES if it is made public knowledge.

Or if it was shot from a chopper. Or many other unsporting scenarios.

Funny thing, is if it is so fine, why do these guys all make up hero stories of free range hunting, climbing the peaks, five days hard hunting instead of 1 hour, if it is all so fine?

I've only ever seen ONE HUNT report where the client admitted a helicopter was used to shoot from in the mountains.

Food for thought.

I never said I condone lying John - I hate all that stuff too. I expect honesty from all others...

You are right, some of them probably dont want to talk about it... and shooting from the chopper in most cases is just downright illegal!!!

Thats the thing with the SCI book for south pacific - they have both free range and estate categories and it does keep a lot of these bastards honest and SCI (in this case) does simply move entries to their correct categories. So if someone enters a 380SCI FRange red stag, the outfitter is XYZ Lodge, without suitable explanation, it is just going to get dropped into the estate book. I saw one just tonight ... a guy who I know quite well who has hunted with us in AUST... his 'free range red stag' is now in the estate book!!!! No he wouldnt like that but fuck him!!!

I know a lot of people dont care about the SCI books and all that but they do mean something to a lot of these guys doing these int. hunts and it is good to see SCi, at least in this case... trying to make things right! This is a record of our times..... Shame they dont have separate estate books for Africa too!!

That all helps keep the outfitters honest too...

John
Those deer in Water Valley are by no means tame - well, at least the one's that jump the fence into the blocks next door.
They are as flighty as the next lot.

Matt
Thanks for that. I haven't read the Alberta thread, I will go and do it.

500nitro

There is obviously a mixture of animals from different sources on the property. As said some flee just as quickly as any other animal in the wild, and are not impeded by fences from escaping on this very large property. Others are much more "tame". However some animals in areas not hunted much in the wild, also act "tame" but are definitely not.
