500Nitro would you recommend one of these instead of a 338 Win Mag? I know they have less on paper but I also know that that is not always the whole story...

To be honest, I don't like 338WM as a Buff calibre, initially
from PH's not liking them and then over the last few years I had no choice but to use one and it doesn't kill emphatically
- it will put them down but they will / can get up and almost
always need a follow up shot. The above seems to apply to Medium sized buff - shot 4 in 30 seconds tis year and ALL needed follow up kill shots but the first shots were good
and stopped them running.

I'm a 375 man myself.

318WR - I use it as I have 3 of them and I'm a traditionalist but I would put it in the same camp as the 338WM.

Nice to use but need to pick shots.

Funny enough, 2 of the charges I've faced have been with the 338WM, one Buff I hit in the neck and she turned (thank god) and the Scrub Bull I just flattened with a brain shot but any gun on either would have done the same so it was a case of use what I had in my hand or die !!!

So no, I would not recommend either as a main Buff gun on a Trophy Hunt. If it's all you own, yes, use it but my suggestion would be make sure you have someone else if your not or don't shoot Buff often.

Mate,

you need to load the image onto the internet first. The above reference looks like it is still on your PC.

Email it to me at PhotosATnitroexpress.com if you don't have a photo hosting site.

500Nitro,
My dad brought his 338 with him when he came up earlier this year and I was not terribly impressed. He was using Barnes X bullets which were great but the round was not totally convincing. Shoulder shots were great IF they broke the shoulder otherwise it was definately a case of a follow up.

I use my 404 as it is light, hits hard and its the first big bore I bought so I have a great love of the cartridge!!!

Pato, what bullet weight?

500, what bullet weight were you using in your .338?

Have you ever used any of the old Winchester 300's?

Doesn't Woodleigh make a 300?

Curious as to the performance of those heavyweights in the .338.

Using 300gn Woodleighs round nose softs and solids, have never had a problem puting a buff down.
Most hunters and PH's usually give them an insurance shot anyway.

This is an awesome thread---really want to have a go at these one day...

Curious in reading the different thoughts on the .338 WM and other cartridges...personally looking at the size of these guys have too agree..it would seem logical to use a .375 or larger if one was available...

I have not had much experience with the .338 Win mag but have used the .338 Ultra-mag on several occassions on elk ...I realize they are probably 1/4 the weight --but the last elk I shot with it --using a .250 gr A-Frame--had total penetration from stem to stern with a 6" exit hole out the arse...shot into the chest at about 150 yards facing me...was quite impressed with that as well..

Still, agree, there is no substitute for the large bores...on large animals...

338 - Can't remember the load used but both 250 and 300gns.
Also some original Factory Winchester 338 ammo (? Silvertip ?)

Alan,
I find the 338 tends to anchor them, but does not "put them down" like a 375H&H does with the same shot. I have had one shot kills with the 338 (before insurance shots which I automatically do regardless) but I just don't like it as
much as the bigger cals.

Everyone's different which is what makes it interesting !!!

Woodleigh make a 250gn 318 bullet which is what I use.
You could virtually duplicate the ballistics using the
Woodleigh 240gn bullet out of the 30.06.

500, I believe {???} most of these buff are shot at fairly close range. If that is true, do you suppose the .338 might have too much velocity for the bullets used?

Meaning, dropping the velocity down to .318 levels might actually benefit penetration and overall performance on thse critters?

Al, were yours shot with .33 factory ammo?

Also, anybody used the .333 NE?

These "More-or-Less .33's" are pretty interesting calibers. I have no experience at all with any of them but have always been curious about the .338.
