Monster one-tonne croc hauled from Northern Territory waterhole

TBA

The moment a monster crocodile weighing nearly a tonne was dragged from Northern Territory wetlands has been captured by a 60 Minutes camera crew.

Reporter Peter Stefanovic travelled to the remote Indigenous community of Peppimenarti – around 320km southwest of Darwin – to meet croc wrangler Matt Wright.

Mr Wright, 34, was summoned by locals to remove a rogue reptile suspected of terrorising the community in recent years, after livestock were taken and a young boy almost snatched.

The former Army reservist and star of National Geograpghic documentary series Outback Wrangler managed to lure the croc into a trap in a waterhole with a rotting pig carcass.

Despite his vast experience, Mr Wright acknowledged the risk involved.

“It can get dangerous if you're not on your game and you don't know what you're doing,” he told Stefanovic.

“They are prehistoric, they know how to kill.

“You just have to stay out of the kill zone.”
A bulldozer and a 4WD were needed to help winch the animal away from the waterhole. (60 Minutes)

After a two-hour standoff, he was eventually able to lasso the animal’s jaw as the sheer size of the beast dawned on locals who gathered to watch the catch.

A 4WD was needed to haul the crocodile from the water, revealing a 4.8m animal with an estimated weight of nearly a tonne.

A towel was placed over the reptile’s eyes and with the help of a bulldozer, the crocodile was transported to a new waterway near Darwin - away from the homes of locals.

Mr Wright’s mother was on hand to watch her son in action for the first time.

“It’s not for everybody,” she said.

“I know he’s not silly when he does this, he puts a lot of thought into it.

“I’m glad I’m a long, long way away – and I don’t have to worry about you.”

Yeah right, to be made into crocodile leather, but lets not upset the viewers and readers with facts and truth eh?

I wonder how old it is?

Quote:

Measuring the longevity of crocodiles can be very difficult, because they live for such a long time. Reliable age records are more difficult to come by, and typically derive from captive animals which has problems (see below). The image on the left is Gomek, who died in February 1997 at the St. Augustine Alligator Farm. He was 17.9 feet when he died, and around 70 to 80 years old. He was captured in Papua New Guinea as an adult, and his age at that time was unknown, although he grew less than a foot in the 20 years he remained in Florida.

Quote:

Bearing these inaccuracies in mind, the oldest crocodilians appear to be the largest species. C. porosus is estimated to live around 70 years on average, and there is limited evidence that some individuals may exceed 100 years. Certainly, individuals in many aboriginal tribes recognise very old crocodiles that have been alive for as long as they can remember. The same is true of C. niloticus, which probably lives nearly as long as the saltwater crocodile. One of the oldest crocodiles recorded died in a zoo in Russia apparently aged 115 years old. Unfortunately, the news report did not identify the species.

That's a lot of croc

On the luggage front, at a croc farm near Darwin we were told they didn't use over six foot due to stretch marks! Not sure if that is just for belt, bags etc. or for luggage too. Certainly was demand in years gone by for big ones for luggage.

I do enjoy this:
Mr Wright’s mother was on hand to watch her son in action for the first time.

“It’s not for everybody,” she said.

“I know he’s not silly when he does this, he puts a lot of thought into it.

“I’m glad I’m a long, long way away – and I don’t have to worry about you.”

that's a monster crocodile and great news that such specimens currently keep on striving..

regards to luggage, the farms I visited point that for luggage they won't use croc longer than 2m, preferably 1.50 m

He would make prime breeding stock for a farm or tourist park.

Not a bad life
