Guessing competition - win ........
      #2402 - 19/04/03 12:02 AM

Have a look at the following photo and guess ....

Guess the following:

1. Which country the photo is taken in;
2. What decade this shoot was held; and
3. What game animals this bunch of desparadoes are hunting?

Here is a hint, the hunt took place on the King's Birthday holiday weekend each year for about seventy years.

Bonus question - what is the man eleventh from the left wearing (seventh from left standing)?

The first person to get three answers right (or closest to them) - either the three numbered questions or two from the three and the bonus question wins the following book.

One of Jim Corbett's excellent books on hunting the maneaters of India.

Just a w.a.g., but could it be Australia in the 1890's, and hunting kangaroos?

No hints yet as I hope to see more tries soon.

A lot of hints are in the photo. You just need to look more closely.

You can have more than one try.

OK we have a winner - super-sleuth Gryphon who pretty well got it all, except for the bonus question. Sorry not skulls, but creative idea.

The country is Australia. In the Barossa Valley and the building behind is the Stockwell Hotel. The group was called the Stockwell Hunt Club.

The year is 1919, and the picture was taken as part of the 25th Anniversary of the establishment of the Club in 1894. The Club continued until the 1950's or 60's.

Game hunted was foxes and hares with points being awarded for them. Rabbits were also shot but being extremely common no points were awarded for bunnies. The winner of the shoot is the one wearing the "?" and he was given a certain title.

A historical article will shortly be printed in the Ezine on the Stockwell Hunt Club.

A new competition will be on the next message.

(Gryphon I will send you an email)

New Guessing competition - new questions [Re: NitroX]
      #2457 - 22/04/03 10:58 PM

A new competition

1. Guess what the winner of the shoot is wearing (the eleventh man from the left - seventh standing from the left)?

2. What is his awarded title for winning the shoot by shooting the most hares and foxes?

3. Which man in the picture is my Grandfather ???
(please say whether he is standing or sitting and the number of persons from the left or right). A hint - his nickname was the "Little Major".

Closest combination of answers wins a copy of another of Corbett's book - "The Maneaters of Kumaon"

****

Just out of interest. I do not know the answer, can anyone identify the three flags ?

so long ago JH..a tad of info gleaned from the net

Stockwell is about 80km north east of Adelaide at the base of the Barossa Range east of Nuriootpa. It was founded by English migrant Samuel Stockwell on land bought from George Fife Angas in 1853 (just 2 years before the Nerlich’s arrival). This confirms the fact that the area was at the frontier of settlement in the mid 1850s. Samuel Stockwell sub-divided part of the land he bought into town blocks and offered them for sale on 4 April 1854, just a year before the Nerlichs arrived in SA. On another part of his land Stockwell built a steam powered flour mill, using the water from the nearby Stockwell Creek. The new town was on the same busy stock route to the River Murray as Truro. The route was pioneered in the late 1830s when cattle were overlanded from New South Wales. In the very early days, the town would have provided services for travellers: places to eat and drink (wine shops were not uncommon), accommodation and a blacksmith. As farmers arrived in the area, different services were required: carpenters, coach builders, wheelwrights, saddlers, bootmakers, a post office (in 1857) and hotel (1857), and general storekeeper. Mr A. Bamberger was storekeeper and first postmaster from 1857 until 1879 so the Nerlichs would almost certainly have known him. The hotel was completed in 1867 when Wilhelm was leasing his farmland north of Stockwell. It had twelve rooms and provided stabling for twenty horses. Its large reception room was used for Lodge meetings, dances and most other community activities.

With a large number of German migrants living in town, both meetings and entertainment at the hotel often had a distinct German flavour. There was the Bismarck Skat Club to play cards, the brass band and hunt club to name just a few. Daily mail deliveries were made by Rounsevell coaching line and later Cobb and Co. In 1877 (the year Wilhelm bought his Truro property), it was connected by telegraph to Adelaide but it was not until 1911 that a telephone exchange was installed.[9]

Interesting from this old post, Stockwell was named after an actual person. I thought it was named after the boring English habit of naming everything after places in the "home country", as there is a Stockwell in the South of London. So it is good it was named after a real person as a "unique" name.

Actually the Barossa is full of unique names, Angaston, named after George Fife Angas, first Chairman of the South Australia Company, and also the gentlemen who loaned funds to many of the German emigrants helping them to transport themselves and buy land in South Australia. All paid back with interest to the Scotsman by the way, so not charity!

Also Nuriootpa and Tanunda, two Aboriginal names. Eden Valley after the Garden of Eden. Lyndoch after Lord Lynedoch. Even Adelaide was named after Queen Adelaide.

Well done in finding this competition. I had completely forgotten about it. Have I still got that book? Somewhere probably!

The man is wearing a wreath made from vine leaves. The "King of the Hunt" would be garlanded with a large wreath of vine leaf rods.

No.2 - close - King of the Hunt. The hunt was held on the King's Birthday holiday weekend.

No.3 - He is the fifth standing guy from the left, I think!? It looks like him from other photos. He is standing looking to the left, with a bit of a thousand yard stare, or perhaps showing his profile . Wearing a suit and tie and a hat.

He was nicknamed "the Little Major" because he was small, but not a military man. However he liked to order people around per reports so he got the nickname, probably behind his back.
