A Couple Of Huge Banteng Bulls
      #179262 - 17/04/11 01:14 PM

I was meaning to post this up before Christmas but the Forum crash put a end to that & I just never got around to it again .

So in November last year , just before the wet I took a group of 4 hunters in 2 groups of 2 for a Banteng hunt on Coburg Peninsula , in what at the time could or looked like the last legal hunt on there (because of licenses , contacts running out , fires & the death of a much respected tribal elder , as far as I know most of this has now cleared up) .

Any way , it was very hot as you would expect at that time of year , I have not hunted on there at that time of year before , well it turned out that time of year was good for getting some huge bulls !

With one very near No1 SCI , if not it should be , as it is best looking most massive set of horns I have seen.

An another in the top 10 .

The other two hunters also got very nice bulls , but not quite in the league of these two monsters !

Cheers !

That is a ripper bull. I might send that pic to a mate who was a rnager up there and shot / culled hundreds of them to see if he has seen anything as big.

Would have been good hunting that's for sure.

Which outfitter did you go under / with ?

.

Are those ticks on them? I shot a scrub bull last year covered with ticks like that (if they are actually ticks). There were hundreds of big grey ticks, and thousands-upon-thousands of little red ticks. The next morning, the ants had eaten all except the largest ones, and they were working on them.

The banteng are usually covered in ticks..

The elder was Robert C... I was very, very lucky to have met him out there, not long before he died - really nice old guy... wish I had of been able to spend more time with him.

That first bull is crazy Sarg... what did it actually measure??

I'll never forget the one I missed out on with JH it was that same shape..

I cant believe the money these things are bringing.

I was told they were selling "Banteng" hunts in the States for $18k.

Aren't they domesticated in SE Asia ? (I don't know). I love the horns on that first one but 18K ! Supply and demand. Love the free market.

You mean Australian banteng hunts or ranch hunts in TX??

The highest I have heard Aussie hunt sell for is $16k but more likely 14-15k at the moment. To be honest we are lucky to be hunting them at all at the moment, so who knows where the price will go (rolls eyes).

Give that they are the rarest bovine in the world, that you can hunt it wouldnt surprise me if the cost of the hunts drive up to 20k pretty quickly, supply and demand as they say... but unfortunately the owners of the lands dont understand the commercial realities of the hunts and will continue to ask for more and more for the animals and expect CPI increases, in the least.

Whats more the continued poor state of the US$ is going to really drive some of these hunt costs up.. it just has to eventually...

Banteng are a great animals, a true wild bovine and a SUPER dangerous game hunt!!

I would rather go to Africa and hunt Elephant or Cape Buffalo for that money.

I know what the trophy fee is for the Aboriginals so the guides are getting plenty.Good on them,I would do the same but I'm not paying it !!.

Is their range increasing or does the fence control them?

Matty re 'a SUPER dangerous game' what makes them so?

Elevating them to the DG title as in lion, cape buffalo etc is a little adventurous is it not?

OZHUNTER.
There are thousands of them but the Aboriginals only release a handful of permits each year driving the price skyward.
The Americans want them to complete their South Pacific trophy list.

There is a bloke breeding them behind wire and on the second cross they get the "boss and white arse".

To my knowledge there are only two outfitters who can supply legal Banteng (Karl Goodhand being the main one) plus one behind wire.

As to being DG.

More challenging than our Buffalo but not in the class of Cape Buffalo,Lion,Elephant and so on.

No doubt someone will point out my mistake's for me.

Well I've measured a lot of Bulls & most times when they get remeasured by a SCI master scorer , some how get much bigger , so I must be a short measurer , he went by rough measure just under 80 SCI points , but had great mass & plenty of length broomed off , the other was just under 70 SCI points .

Those are a type of Buffalo Fly , I have not noticed the ticks to bad on them myself .

The thing I was amazed more on was the fact both were Jet Black still & had fairly good body condition .
Mostly I look for Old Bulls going a slate or greying colour & back bones sticking out , to be even close to this size .

I wont comment on the range as they is a lot of debate on that .

A excellent game animal , very smart & alert , very dangerous , I have been charged a few times & been tossed once & was very lucky on that occasion .

We had a hunter gored by one a while back also , in the upper thigh .

But some times standing on the side of the road , chewing his cud !

I think a better game animal than a Cape Buff , which has a massive amount of hype , a lot from poor shooting , poor guiding or crap bullets

Same as our goring (poor guide attention) & my tossing (wrong cartridge & poor bullet placement)
That was a lot of years ago & I have more respect for them now & like powerful large cartridges

A pretty bold statement mate Although they do look like an alert animal.

"I think a better game animal than a Cape Buff , which has a massive amount of hype , a lot from poor shooting , poor guiding or crap bullets"
However, would love to hunt one one day but not at those prices.

Fantastic animals, sarg. Especially the first.

As for the difficulty of hunting them, well the first is legal access. Compared to cape buffalo I couldn't say as I have only hunted one of each. Dangerous, likelihood to charge? Couldn't say as I've never been charged by either of cape buffalo or banteng. They were fun to hunt, disappeared when they could, fun to track, sometimes stood around as long as no one exposed themselves to sight, other times fled at first sight after a few seconds.

A few "wild" Banteng exist outside of Coburg and the Wire location. Not many but they are seen.

Number of incidents as a proportion of hunts. Especially at close range.

I would say all wild bovines could take that title.
