Hunt Australia, very good hunt !
      #163658 - 08/07/10 02:29 PM

Just got home from a free range buffalo hunt in Australia with my son. Hunted in the Gan Gan area of the Arnhemland with Hunt Australia http://www.huntaust.com.au/home.html This was a true wilderness hunt. This is the perfect place to use a double rifle, enough cover to stalk closely yet still open enough to be able to spot game out to 200 yards in places. This was a real fun hunt, saw numerous excellent animals and between myself and my son took 3 buffalo bulls over 100" SCI including one old boy that was over 110". Also was able to take a old red scrub bull on the last day of the hunt (boy are they wild!)

Matt Graham, the operator gets the highest marks for providing exactly what was promised. Peter Harding, his guide at the buffalo camp was the hardest working guide I have ever hunted with and was also a real pleasant person to spend time with.

If you are looking for a place to try out your double rifle, or just want to hunt some buffalo I would recommend without reservation that you talk to Matt at Hunt Australia. I am already thinking of a return trip!

Well-done! What kind of rifle did you use?

Yep Matt does an excellent job and the buffalo are outstanding at his concession. Not always a 100 plus, but there can be.

Your buffalo has magnificent crescent shaped horns and will look fantastic in your trophy room.

I assume you will be doing a full shoulder mount?

I like the "red bulls" too. I took one in Arnhemland some time ago, and the scrub bulls are often exciting and cheeky to hunt.

Both bulls are excellent material for a double rifle.

Please tell us about your rifle and load too. I would like to know more about that make and rifle looks quite petite too. But maybe you are a big guy?!

And more photos and stories please, if you have them.

Used a Verney-Carron, model AZUR SxS in 450-400 3", with factory Hornady softpoint ammo. My son does not have a lot of experience with double rifles but he was able to use the same gun with no problems and took a excellent bull and a cull cow buffalo like he had used a double for years.

Oh yeah!
Well done, fine tropies and great photos.
Thanks for showing us, and like John said, would love to see more piccy's if you get a chance, especially some of your double.

Some better images for you...

Cheers Ken - thanks for your comments !! Great buffalo - thats for sure. The 110 SCI is one of the better ever taken at Gan Gan concession.

As requested here are some pics of my Verney-Carron 450-400. This gun has a second barrel set (pictured) in 12ga fully rifled for shooting slugs. If you click on the picture you can make them larger. Unlike production guns all of the Verney-Carron custom shop guns are made to order so that there are seldom two of them exactly the same. A PDF catalog can be seen here www.verney-carron.us

I like it.

A question. How does shot work through a rifled 12 bore? Probably no where near as well as a smooth bore?

But a great rifle to use for a shotgun only season area perhaps?

Otherwise, what would you be using the 12 bore set of barrels for?

Thanks.

I hunt in a few areas that require shotgun slugs, these are usually populated areas and the feeling is that a rifle is too dangerous. I set up the second set of barrels for use in these areas, and it is so much more fun to hunt with this gun than some old single barrel shotgun. The shotgun barrels have 3 leaf express sights and day/night front sight along with German pivot mounts.
I have never tried ordinary shot shells, I suspect the patterns would look like a doughnut.

Kebco,

A question regarding your custom made V-C double rifles.

You have a set of 12-bore rifled barrels for your .450/400 rifle.

Are you able to make "paradox" type sets of 12-bore barrels as well, with only the final section of the 12-bore barrels rifled?

Thanks.

Excellent question, it has never come up before and I do not have the answer. I can ask the factory but does anyone still make factory ammo? Factory ammo would be needed for regulation and getting the barrels proofed.
